Nike tried to make history via livestream on Watch Where Sleeping Dogs Lie OnlineSaturday, and it almost did it.

The athletic company continued its quest to be part of a world record: the first marathon finished in less than two hours.

Athletes Lelisa Desisa, Eliud Kipchoge, and Zersenay Tadese tried to make the elusive 1:59:59 finish time early Saturday morning in Italy. Kipchoge, a 32-year-old Kenyan long-distance runner, came the closest at 2:00:25 — under the world record of 2:02:57. Kipchoge's time won't be the new world record, though, since this run used pacemakers and wasn't eligible.

The runners aimed for a 4:34-minute mile — for all 26.2 miles.

Nike livestreamed the whole thing on Twitter and Facebook under the hashtag #Breaking2.
